What is an IBCLC?

International Board Certified Lactation Consultants are the only internationally recognized health care professionals who specialize in lactation care.  IBCLCs must complete numerous lactation clinical hours and pass a rigorous examination that demonstrates the ability to provide knowledgeable, comprehensive lactation and breastfeeding care.

When might I call a lactation consultant?

👶 mother is experiencing sore, cracked or bleeding nipples
👶 baby is struggling to latch
👶 baby is not gaining an appropriate amount of weight
👶 mother is concerned about low milk supply
👶 baby is fussy at the breast
👶 mother has recurrent mastitis or plugged ducts
👶 feedings last longer than 45 minutes at least twice a day
👶 mother had previous breast surgeries
👶 baby is being supplemented with formula, but mother wants to preserve breastfeeding
👶 mother plans to return to work and wants to develop a plan for pumping/working
👶 mother had difficulty breastfeeding a previous baby
👶 mother feels like breastfeeding simply isn't going well
